Georgia's car imports fall to four years: U.S. cars account for the majority, and China ranks fifth

According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of Georgia, from January to May 2026, Georgia's passenger car imports fell to the lowest point in nearly four years. Data shows that in the first five months of this year, Georgia imported a total of 77,054 vehicles, with a total value of approximately US$1.251 billion; compared with 90,434 vehicles, with a total amount of US$1.567 billion in the same period in 2025. On a year-on-year basis, the volume of imports fell by 14.8%, and the volume of imports fell by 20.2%. Behind the decline in volume and price, it reflects that Georgia's automobile trade is undergoing an obvious cooling cycle.

The American car source still dominates, and Germany and Japan follow the high-end route.

From the perspective of vehicle source structure, the United States is still the absolute main force in Georgia's automobile market according to import amount. In the first five months, Georgia imported 58,881 vehicles from the United States, totaling US$698.1 million, accounting for more than 76% of total imports. This also confirms the dominant position of the U.S. used car auction market in Georgia's car trade chain. It was closely followed by Germany (2,000 vehicles,$171.2 million) and Japan (7,487 vehicles,$166.5 million). It is worth noting that although Germany does not import much, the value of bicycles is extremely high, indicating that they are taking the mid-to-high-end route; while Japanese cars focus on cost performance and practicality.

China ranked fifth in this list, exporting a total of 3,339 vehicles worth US$31 million. In addition, the United Kingdom, Turkey, South Korea, Canada, Italy and Azerbaijan also entered the top ten. Overall, Georgia is still highly dependent on Europe, the United States, Japan and South Korea for its imported vehicle sources. Although China ranks among the top five in terms of quantity, the value of bicycles is relatively low, and economic models are still the main focus.

Weak local demand, its status as a transit hub is being tested

On the surface, China's direct exports to Georgia do not account for a small proportion of the total plate of tens of thousands. However, for China's used car export practitioners, the Georgian market cannot only be looked at by the "terminal customs clearance volume." Georgia's core value has always been its status as a "transit hub" in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Through nodes such as Poti Port, a large number of vehicles will be re-exported to landlocked countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan and even Kazakhstan.

Therefore, the 14.8% decline in overall imports not only means that local consumers in Georgia are buying fewer cars, but also to a large extent means that the volume of regional trade radiating through Georgia to surrounding areas is shrinking. Against the backdrop of fluctuating global logistics costs and foreign exchange pressure from neighboring countries, the flow rate of the Caucasus transit channel is slowing down.

written in the end

Georgia's car imports fell in volume and price in the first five months to a four-year freezing point, which is a signal that cannot be ignored for traders who rely on the Caucasus Corridor. The absolute monopoly of American car sources will be difficult to shake in the short term. Although China's car sources rank among the top five, they are more likely to share a share in the low-end market segments. For domestic used car export practitioners, at this stage, when doing transit routes in Georgia and even the entire Caucasus, they must be vigilant against the dual risks of "weak demand + declining transit volume". Don't blindly distribute goods to Poti Port, but find out where orders and terminals are. If the purchasing power of final buyers in Central Asia and the Caucasus declines, the risk of inventory backlog at transit ports will soar. Next, it is more meaningful to keep an eye on the transit duty-free policy of Poti Port and the customs clearance trends of neighboring countries than simply looking at Georgia's own import data.
